Hydrogen in the U.S.
“Clean hydrogen is a game changer. It will help decarbonize high-polluting heavy-duty and industrial sectors, while delivering good-paying clean energy jobs and realizing a net-zero economy by 2050“
– Secretary Jennifer Granholm, June 2021
U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm launched the Energy Earthshots Initiative, the first aimed at reducing the cost of renewable hydrogen to $1 per kilogram by 2030.
The initiative establishes a framework for carbon-free hydrogen deployment in the Biden Administration’s American Jobs Plan, including financial support for demonstration projects. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that such a cost reduction in renewable hydrogen will unlock a 5x increase in demand.
